Why Cosset Cares About The Rainforests

Oil Palm Harvest

Rainforests are the oldest, and one of the most amazing, ecosystems in the world. They are packed with more than half of the world’s plant and animal species, even though they cover just 6% of the Earth’s surface. The sad part is rainforests once covered 14% of land on Earth and many biologists expect they will lose 5-10% of their species each decade1.

Where does Palm Oil fit in? Oil Palm Trees (Elaeis guineensis) and their fruits are a valuable crop and one of the cheapest forms of edible oil to produce. Because of this, Oil Palm plantations have been popping up all over the world. The problem with that is, to make room for these plantations, millions of acres of rainforest are destroyed each year to accommodate the demand2. Rapid deforestation ruins habitats and endangers animal species while burning trees and peatlands to clear space causes an incredible release of carbon into the Earth's atmosphere.
